What is CDX?
The Community Development Exchange is a membership network of individuals and organisations from across the UK who work, or have an interest, in community development. Established in 1991, the organisation was known as the Standing Conference for Community Development (SCCD) until January 2004.

By using and promoting the values and approaches of community development, CDX works to bring about positive changes towards social justice and equality. We do this by sharing information, experience and practice through a variety of means, including conferences; networks; newsletters; the website; and research.

Who joins CDX?
The CDX membership base is diverse and varied, including local authorities, policy makers, academics, non-profit organisations and 'grass roots' workers throughout the UK. Members can be individuals, organisations or networks, they can work at local, (sub)regional, national or international levels, and can be within the community, voluntary, public and private sectors.

As such, CDX members represent a wide range of interests, experience and perspectives whilst sharing a belief that a clear set of values and commitments should be at the heart of developing active and sustainable communities.

For more information on the benefits of membership, see the membership page.

How is CDX funded?
CDX is a not-for-profit organisation and a registered charity. The majority of CDX funding comes from grants from the Cabinet Office's Office of the Third Sector. Other income is made from annual membership subscriptions.

How is CDX managed?
CDX is an autonomous membership organisation run for and by members. This is done through a board of trustees - a group of diverse volunteers from within the membership - which is responsible for the overall management of CDX, including planning of objectives, budgeting, funding applications, and the appointment of staff. Trustees are elected by members at the CDX Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Within the board, there are elected officers, who take up the roles of Chair, Vice-Chair, Personnel officer and Treasurer. Officers within the Board serve CDX on a voluntary basis for up to three years.

In addition to the board of trustees, CDX's direction is informed by co-optees - stakeholders who are not elected but are invited to attend meetings and serve the organisation in an advisory capacity.

For a list of current trustees, officers and co-optees, go to CDX Structure. For a list of staff within CDX go to Staff.

If you are interested in becoming involved in the management committee of CDX or if you have any related enquiries, please contact our Chair, Sue Shaw, at chair@cdx.org.uk

Can I participate in a CDX event?
CDX hosts one residential conference and a number of one-day conferences or regional events every year. There are a number of ways of getting involved in these events.

Firstly, you can suggest a theme for a conference - our conference themes often come from issues or suggestions raised by our members or conference participants. Let us know if there's an issue or an aspect of community development you'd like to see tackled at one of our events.

Secondly, you can suggest workshops or presentations that you'd like to contribute to an event - you might want to share the work you're doing or the lessons your organisation has learnt from its community development projects. If you've got an idea but need some support putting together a workshop let us know.

Thirdly, you can come along, participate and bring some information about your work to display at the 'ideas exchange' that we always try to find room for at our events.

For more information about participating at an CDX event, please contact our Outreach & Support Officer, Tanwir Rauf.

Can I submit material for the CDX Magazine?
CDX produces a quarterly publication - CDX Magazine - which provides updates and articles about the people, policy and practice involved in community development. It is the only magazine which focuses specifically on community development across and beyond the UK.

CDX Magazine is sent to all CDX members, and to other subscribers who have an interest in community development. It is also available at CDX events. The distribution rate is currently around 600 copies per issue.

CDX Magazine is a great way to get in touch with other community development practitioners and decision-makers, to celebrate your successes or share your frustrations. If you'd like to include your news or contribute your ideas, contact Tess Humphrys at CDX. If you don't have time (or the inclination!) to write an article, Tess can arrange a visit to discuss your experience and practice and write this up into an article you can check before it is published.

If you would like to advertise through CDX Magazine, please see below.

Can I advertise in the CDX Magazine or website?
CDX is happy to list community development events, training, news and resources in the CDX Magazine and website - please send any notifications to Tess.

Although CDX has a policy of not placing any advertisements actually within its Magazine or website (except for online job adverts), we will place leaflets as inserts in the newsletter for a cost ranging from £80 - £250, with a distribution of around 600. Extra charges will be added if inserts are bulky or if they push the newsletter postage cost into a higher weight band. In the interests of our members, material must be approved by CDX before distribution. For any queries relating to advertising through CDX Magazine or on the website please contact Tess.
