Travelling Towards a Better Future - the Health and Wellbeing of the Gypsy and Traveller community in Hull & East Riding

The Gypsy & Traveller Community is one of the most marginalized communities in the UK.  Research has confirmed they have amongst the poorest health in UK of any racial group and face discrimination on almost a daily basis.

This conference follows on from the Hull & East Riding Gypsy and Traveller Health & Well-being event held in 2005 in which service providers and community members from across the region came together to discuss the issues faced by the community and suggested ways of tackling inequalities.  So, after 5 years, we ask: has anything REALLY changed?

Workshops include:

  • The impact of Accomodation Policy and Eviction
  • "Not in our backyard!" Best Practice for sustainable accomodation
  • The Health status of Gypsies and Travellers
  • Understanding the Misunderstood - Who are Gypsies and Travellers?
  • A Better Future? Hear from the Children and Young People
  • Getting involved and changing things together

Speakers include:

  • Ann Purdy - NHS East Riding of Yorkshire
  • Elaine Brattan and Lindsey Jones - DOC Gypsy and Traveller Projects
  • Siobhan Spencer - Derbyshire Gypsy Liaison Group
  • Others tbc
