Resistance and renewal: Commmunity development in the 'big society' - Conference

Communities are being expected to deliver the 'big society' over the next few years while at the same time experiencing massive cuts in services and funding. Community development support is being withdrawn and yet there is greater need than ever for this approach. In the north west region we have been working on a community development strategy.

A regional conference will be held to consider how to take this forward in the context of the 'big society' agenda. If you are a community activist, an active citizen, working in a paid role with communities or interested in any aspect of community development, you are warmly invited. Our keynote speaker will be Margaret Ledwith, Emeritus Professor of community development and social justice at the University of Cumbria.

There are workshops planned on

  • the community organisers initiative
  • training and shared learning for community development
  • community empowerment challenges
  • income generating options (funding, social enterprise, etc.)
  • equalities and power

There will also be roundtable discussions to share your experiences of resistance and renewal, and to think about what action we can take to secure the future for independent community action and community development in the north west.

Places are limited so please register your interest in advance with Hilda Reidy (info@communitynw.org.uk). A programme, registration form and venue details will be circulated shortly.

The conference is being organised by Communities North West and Alison Gilchrist on behalf of NW Together We Can. Further information: alison@alisongilchrist.co.uk
