Gearing Up for new Community Development Opportunities: Seminar for experienced CD workers

Potential for work through associateship with HELP

While many CD jobs are at risk or have already been cut, HELP has made headway towards getting wider commitment to CD by the health service, by demonstrating to the Department of Health that holistic neighbourhood development saves NHS money. The model also involves other local issues and agencies. See www.healthempowermentgroup.org.uk

We have demonstrated our model, called Transformative Community Development (TCD) through three pilot projects in 2010. With DH encouragement we are planning to market this model to GP Consortia, LAs and PCTs in 2011. If we are successful we will be looking for associates who can be part of a local team (part time). Associates would need to

  • be effective and experienced CD workers
  • be comfortable with our model
  • be willing to carry out or supervise projects under our general direction (but with plenty of room for initiative)

TCD has certain differences from general CD. It works to a seven-step model to create or strengthen a neighbourhood-wide partnership in one year. It is outcome-oriented and seeks both statistical and qualitative evidence. It supports people in becoming community leaders. And it builds a community of practice amongst other local frontline workers as well as building the neighbourhood community itself.

We are holding this event to:

  • share our experience with you
  • enable you to understand our method
  • mutually assess whether you could be a HELP associate
  • invite your thoughts on the further development of this initiative

The content will cover:
Introductions: where are you coming from?; Outline of the HELP project;
Current health policy context; The HELP fieldwork method;
The HELP evidence method; What has happened in our three pilots;
The strategy for marketing HELP and widening its use;
How local HELP teams would work; The arrangement with associates;
Comments on the day and open discussion on further development
