Britain becoming a ‘nation of strangers’

More than a third of people living in the UK would not trust anybody on their street with their keys, according to research carried out by the BBC.

Meanwhile, more than one in five people believe their neighbourhoods have become less friendly in the last five years.

The research into neighbourliness aimed to find out how much people interact with others on their own street, and found that half of Britons have said hello to fewer than half a dozen people in their street in the week. One in ten of those questioned spoke to no-one.

Some now think there is a serious decline in everyday interaction, which they argue can lead to needless disputes.

This tends to manifest itself in a reliance on the police and the authorities to get involved with rows over wheelie bins, parking and everyday neighbourhood problems.
